Why is the strap so short?

Because a short drop puts the bag under the arm, where your torso helps carry it. A long strap lets the bag swing at the hip, and a swinging bag pulls at the shoulder twice with every step.

Does it stand up on its own?

No. A quilted crescent with no frame slumps softly when it is empty. That is the trade for the weight.

What is a ruched handle?

A gathered handle that spreads under load instead of folding into a cord. It is softer on the shoulder than a flat strap, and the pieces that have one say so in the name.
